About mahjong & tiles games

Mahjong solitaire is one of the oldest computer puzzle formats still in wide use, and it has survived because the core decision is genuinely good. You remove matching pairs of tiles from a stack, but only tiles that are free: nothing on top, and at least one side exposed. That single restriction turns a matching game into a resource management problem, where the question is never "can I match these" but "should I".

The critical quality signal in any mahjong game is whether boards are guaranteed solvable. Many implementations deal layouts that have no solution at all, which makes losing meaningless. Mahjong Classic generates only solvable boards, so every loss is genuinely a consequence of the order in which you cleared tiles, which is what makes improving possible.

Mahjong Lines represents the other branch of the family. In connect-style mahjong every tile sits on one flat level and nothing is hidden; what limits you is whether two matching tiles can be joined by a path of at most three straight lines. It is the more approachable of the two formats and a good place to start if stacked layouts have put you off.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mahjong solitaire the same as the four-player game?

No. Mahjong solitaire is a single-player tile-matching puzzle that borrows the tiles from traditional Mahjong. The four-player Chinese game of Mahjong is a completely different game with different rules, played competitively with draws and discards.

When can I remove a Mahjong tile?

A tile is selectable when nothing is stacked on top of it and at least one of its left or right sides is unblocked. You then match it with another free tile showing the same face. Flower tiles pair with any flower, and season tiles with any season.

What is Mahjong connect?

Mahjong connect places all tiles on a single flat level. Two matching tiles can be removed if you can draw a connecting path between them using no more than three straight segments through empty space. It is generally easier than stacked solitaire because nothing is hidden.
