Merge puzzles look like matching games and play like resource management ones. In a match-3 the move you want either exists on the board or does not, and your job is to see it. That inversion is the whole genre. An empty cell in a match-3 is a reward, evidence that you cleared something. An empty cell in a merge game is your remaining budget. Is Block Blast 2048 the same as the original 2048?
